Quills Picks Winners – Thursday 12/5 – Gulfstream Park Race 6

We head down I-75 over to Gulfstream Park for today’s featured race, and today we do have an interesting one. We have maiden juvenile fillies sprinting five furlongs on the turf course today.

Gulfstream Park Race 6 – Maiden Special Weight

We have a field of 16 entered for today’s race, but only 12 will run. Favored in this field is the 4 Sweet Kaufy (5/2 morning line). She will be making her debut for a trainer that wins with his first time starters 30% of the time. Her sire Caravaggio has his offspring win 19% of the time with first time starters, 20% with two-year-old first timers and 17% with turf sprints. She trained well for her debut here and could be very tough today.

The 7 High Breeze (8/1 ML) did not show much while riding the rail going longer at Keeneland. Her debut at Laurel was better as she recovered from getting pinched at the start to close to finish fourth in a five-and-a-half-furlong sprint. It might be the class of horses at Keenelend or it could be the fact that she did not like going two turns, at least so far in her young career. But she will be worth playing while adding blinkers today.

The 3 Candy Buzz (8/1 ML) will make her debut today as well. She may be a filly that will be better suited for longer distances, but she does have a nice work on the turf at Palm Meadows in preparation for today.

The 14 Thankfully (6/1 ML) has to draw in but could be dangerous today. She had a fairly similar outside post last time out and closed to finish third while very wide on the turn and in the stretch. She will definitely be worth a look if she runs today.

Joe’s Pick

Although Wesley Ward’s two-year-old and first timer stats may be skewed because he is the king of the four-and-a-half-furlong chute races at the April Keeneland meet, he does have his horses running from race one. We are obviously not in Lexington, but he knows how to get his first timers to the winner’s circle as quickly as possible.

I’ll call this race 4-14-7-3 and my play is $20 to win on the 4. Best of luck everyone!
