We kick off a new week with at Finger Lakes as we have state bred juvenile fillies going six furlongs here. Like Philadelphia where I live, it rained overnight in Farmindale, New York. But unlike up in the Finger Lakes region, Philly saw its first rainfall in 43 days.
When you read on here today, I am planning for today’s race to be run on a wet surface. Whether that is sloppy or muddy or something other than fast, that’s what I was thinking when I handicapped this race today.
Finger Lakes Race 8 – Shesastoldcoldfox Stakes
Favored in this field of eight juvenile fillies is the 1 Idyll Gossip (5/2 morning line). She comes in after what appears to be a lackluster performance last time out in the NY Breeders Futurity three weeks ago. When you look further into the race, the winner won by almost eight lengths and the top five finishers were all from Aqueduct. So there will be a ton of class relief here today.
The 8 April Storm (3/1 ML) draws the outside for today’s race. She stalked in her debut two weeks ago and won by eight lengths going 110 yards less than today at 61/1 odds. With a couple of fillies looking to go for the lead, she could be stalking just like she did in her shocking upset at Finger Lakes.
The 6 Brooklyn Rhapsody (8/1 ML) has a win over wet going with a wet-fast win at Delaware Park in August. She improved off of that effort with as stalking win last month also at Delaware where she was claimed. These connections must be eyeing this race as she is a New York bred who should fit in just fine here today.
The 3 Bald Kitten (10/1 ML) won in the mud here at Finger Lakes last month. She will need to improve on that race to win here today, but it is not out of the realm of possibility that she could steal this today.
Joe’s Pick
The 1 Idyll Gossip did have trouble last time out slamming into another horse at the start. She also was facing the boys. I love to play a filly who is running against her own gender. I’ll take her to win this race. I’ll call this 1-6-8-3 and my play is $20 to win on the 1. Best of luck everyone and see ya in the winner’s circle!
