Quills Picks Winners – Friday 2/23 – Gulfstream Park Race 6

By Joe Quillen

Friday 2/23/24 – Gulfstream Park Race 6

We stay at Gulfstream Park for Friday’s sixth race of the day which will be the subject of today’s Quills Picks Winners. We have 11 three year old maiden fillies going five furlongs on the turf course.

The favorite in this wide open race is the 8 Perilous (4/1 morning line). She was squeezed back on the backstretch and then was interfered with while very wide in the stretch. If she has a clear trip, she wins, but I am concerned about the outside post.

The 5 Haley’s Honor (9/2 ML) tried to go get to wire at Tampa last month and ends up here today. The horse that broke her maiden last time out did win again stretching to a mile at Tampa Bay Downs. But her speed may get cancelled out by Taprixie (#11, 12/1 ML) who will be on the outside for today’s race.  But Taprixie’s last race was on dirt, and this is a turf sprint.

The 6 Far and Few had all kinds of problems when she was last on the turf at this distance in December. She was on the lead last time out and tired on the dirt here at Gulfstream. If she gets a clean start, that will help her immensely.

The 3 Her Diamonds (6/1 ML) is a first timer who has been working on the turf and his sire City of Light has his offspring win 21% of the time on the turf. This might be a play if you are not scared of a first timer.

The 1 Worship (6/1 ML) may want longer here. Distorted Humor offspring win at an average of 7 furlongs. I think that this horse will pick up some of the pieces and will be dangerous in longer races once she gets a couple of races in whether or not she wins today.

I think in the end, this is about the 8 Perilous and the 6 Far and Few getting clean trips. I think Perilous will be on the hip of another filly in the stretch and win this race. Far and Few gets second here. I’ll call this 8-6-1-5 and my play is $20 to win on the 8.

There are a couple of big races around the world, but I won’t be looking at the Saudi Cup race from Saudi Arabia, but I will definitely look at the Rebel from Oaklawn which has a field of thirteen horses. I’ll look at that race, and possibly others when the next article of Quills Picks Winners returns tomorrow. Good luck everyone!
